THE WIDOW
Widow is not a word that is strange to us. It simply means a woman whose husband has died and not married again (while the man that lost his wife is called a widower). It also means a woman who is now single again by reason of the death of her husband. According to pocket oxford dictionary it is “a woman who lost her husband by death and not married again”
The reason I chose this topic is because of the ways widows are treated in our societies, it is contrary to the plan, purpose, and the desire of God for them. This set of people are very important to God.
Have you ever wondered why God sent Prophet Elijah to the widow of Zarephath? where there no rich and wealthy people in Israel then who could ordinarily without stress take care of him better than this widow, in fact giving him comfort, rest, peace in the midst of the famine? Also where there no better widows (rich, wealthy and God fearing) in Israel
God knew the situation of the woman. She had relatives, friends or in laws, where were they when all that she had left was for one meal and after that die. Don’t you think she might have asked for assistance which never came forth? Everybody forsook her but God never did. If God had sent Elijah to somewhere else other the house of this widow, it will mark the end of their lives. So, in order to preserve her life and that of her son, He sent Elijah there and this action wiped away tears from her life.
Jesus in the New Testament had an occasion to wipe the tears of a widow. To her and the people around it was too late since her case was worst than that of the widow of Zarephath. Imagine a woman escorting the corpse of her only son to the cemetery for burial, it is really terrible and painful, but Jesus came to the scene at the right time, he is never too late, his coming gave joy and rejoicing, hope and a future to the woman. And Paul encouraged and commanded us in the bible to look after those who are widows indeed.
Instead what we see in our societies especially in Africa and Asia is heart breaking, evil and wickedness against them. You will hardly believe that in this 21st century there are societies that force the widows to drink the water used in bathing the corpse of their late husbands. Others make them to swear or take something with their mouths from the body of their late husbands. If the men died in some part of Africa whether old or young, their wives are responsible, but never the other way round.
These are some of the examples that time will permit me to put on paper for now. The question is what can be done to either stop or drastically reduce this evil and great wickedness against widow, humanity and God.
Don’t forget that a lot of people will visit and read this write up, those that are directly or indirectly affected and perhaps people who will want to help but do not know how to go about it. So tell us your experience or that of others and possibly proffer a solution if possible so that together we can fight this evil and make this world a better place for them and all of us to live in.
